On the afternoon of December 20th, Tong Jiadong, distinguished professor at Nankai University and guest professor at School of Northeast Asia Studies, was invited to give a lecture at the 21st “Northeast Asia Academic Forum”. The lecture was under the title of “China-US Trade War and Its Durability”, and was chaired by Associate Professor Li Dongxin, who is also the Director of International Politics and Economics Department, School of Northeast Asia Studies. More than 100 teachers and students from Shandong University at Weihai attended the lecture.
During the lecture, Professor Tong first reviewed the general course of the Sino-US trade war in the period of economic globalization adjustment, and then conducted an in-depth analysis of the causes, nature, coping strategies of the Sino-US trade war and international economic order changes because of it. Professor Tong pointed out that this trade war is a long-term strategy, mainly aimed at China’s strategic emerging industries. The purpose is to curb China’s rise in the fourth industrial revolution, and destroy Chinese economy with a “lose-lose strategy”, so that US can maintain its world hegemony status. Therefore, China should use a variety of means in a coordinated manner and actively respond to it. To fight for a good development environment in the future at a minimum cost. In addition, Professor Tong also pointed out that the United States is now unable to bear the responsibility as maintainer and leader of the current international economic order. Building a fairer and more reasonable international economic order has become the consensus of all countries in the world.
At the end of the lecture, Professor Tong answered questions from the audiences concerning the “Thucydides trap”, the perception of the trade war shared by the US government and the American people, the contradictions between “lose-lose strategy” and the attempt to rebuild the US-centric world trade order.
The “Northeast Asia Academic Forum” periodically invites domestic and foreign scholars to give lectures to teachers and students at Shandong University. It is committed to creating an academic platform for face-to-face communication with well-known scholars. The 21st lecture analyzed the Sino-US trade war and its persistence and other related issues, so that students have a deeper understanding of it and acquire a new way of thinking in their future research.
