On September 24, Northeast Asia Academic Forum invited Professor Chu Shulong from School of Public Administration of Tsinghua University as guest lecturer. Professor Chu talked about “China-US relations and the development of American politics”. The lecture was hosted by Professor Zhang Jingquan, Vice Dean of School of Northeast Asia Studies and Vice President of the Institute of International Studies at Shandong University. More than 50 teachers and students attended the event.
During the lecture, Professor Chu first reviewed the development of Sino-US relations since the establishment of diplomatic relations, and interpreted the current tensions in Sino-US relations. Professor Chu believes that the main reasons for the changes in the US strategy for China include the rise of China, the US’s judgment on China’s internal affairs and diplomacy, and the impact of the COVID-19 on the US economy and Trump’s reelection campaign. Professor Chu pointed out that different results of the U.S. presidential election in 2020 will lead to different strategies toward China as well as different development trends in Sino-U.S. relations. As to how to respond to the US containment against China, Professor Chu put forward recommendations in five categories and ten aspects. After analyzing the relationship between China and the United States, Professor Chu interpreted the serious defects and decline of the American social democratic system.
At the end of the lecture, a question-and-answer session was arranged. Students asked Professor Chu about the Sino-US “New Cold War” relationship, and how the American political parties deal with the relationship between party interests and national interests. Professor Chu answered all the questions in detail.
The Northeast Asia Academic Forum regularly invites famous scholars from home and abroad to give lectures to teachers and students on current political issues, and is committed to creating a platform for face-to-face exchanges between teachers and students and well-known scholars.
