To further improve the training level of international talents and cultivate high-quality students with international vision and capability to work at international organizations, from August 10th to 28th, 15 students from Shandong University participated in the 2020 Global Youth Leadership Academy (GYLA) hosted by the International Training Centre of the International Labour Organization (ITCILO). This Academy attracted nearly 170 teachers and students from 9 well-known domestic universities, including Shandong University, Zhejiang University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, and Harbin Institute of Technology. Wei Xiaohang, an undergraduate Korean major from School of Northeast Asia Studies won full recognition from scholars, experts and officials of international organizations and won the “Outstanding Student” award for his active performance, fluent English expression and confident speech.
During the three-week course, Wei Xiaohang gave full play to his professional knowledge and comprehensive ability, actively participated in various activities of GYLA, served as the leader of the video team, and was responsible for the course screenshots and the closing ceremony video editing work. As a news team member, he was responsible for news writing, picture production and typesetting. He submited to GYLA DAILY and participate in the short video contest to express his views on the responsibility of young people and the mission of the United Nations. In the final speech and defense session on August 25, Wei Xiaohang chose the topic “What I’ve learned about No Poverty in SDGs from GYLA”. Based on his own experience of studying in North Korean, he shared his insights on “eliminating poverty”, the primary goal of sustainable development of the United Nations, and won the unanimous praise from the judges and teachers.
The GYLA builds a bridge for Chinese young people to participate in global governance and access international organizations through close cooperation with United Nations agencies. Many outstanding students of GYLA receive offer by United Nations agencies for internship and work, enter world-class universities to further their education, or find jobs at well-known multinational companies.
