Overview:
Shandong University at Weihai is one of the earliest universities in China to establish Korean majors, after the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and South Korea. Rated as a national special major, the Korean major at School of Northeast Asia Studies enjoys a national reputation marked by “leading academic status, strong faculty composition, innovative management and high teaching quality”. Our graduates show advantageous competitiveness on job market. The department has 18 faculty members, namely 5 professors (1 first-tier professor), 7 associate professors and 6 lecturers. For those who plan on pursuing graduate studies, 3 doctoral advisors and 10 master advisors are available.
The goal of training Korean language majors is to cultivate all-round development of morality, intelligence, physique and aesthetics. Students are to nourish a socialist humanistic spirit, to master solid Korean language knowledge, to equip high humanistic qualities, to be familiarized with extensive knowledge of humanities and social sciences, as well as to grasp a broad international vision and cross-cultural communication skills. Out graduates will be able to work in fields relevant to their majors and in demand of innovative and comprehensive professionals.
After four years of study, students should be proficient in the basic knowledge of Korean language, Korean culture, and national conditions of North/South Korea; able to listen, speak, read, write, and translate in Korean; capable of using a second foreign language in practical situations; familiar with basic scientific research methods such as literature retrieval, data query and collation; and qualified to perform in the field of translation, foreign affairs, research, education, and management.
In order to improve students’ professional and comprehensive ability, the department has carried out bold reforms and innovations in curriculum designing and training methods. In addition to general Korean language courses, students are also offered elective courses such as Korean political diplomacy, economy and trade, history and culture, and social development. Students are encouraged to learn the basics of another professional field through the “Korean +” mode. In order to broaden students’ international horizons, 90% of undergraduates go to partner universities in South Korea for six to twenty-four months as exchange students.
